The Mission of The Good Samaritan Inn is to create opportunities with the support of our community toward improving the lives of our economically disadvantaged neighbors through daily nourishment, life skills education, and job training programs.
In the early 1980s, four churches recognized the economic conditions prevailing in Decatur, IL and decided to work toward improving the lives of those in need. A temporary location was obtained and the first noon meal was served on April 12, 1982. The Good Samaritan Inn relies on its volunteers who prepare and serve the meals each day. We are supported by over 50 organizations such as local faith communities, businesses, schools, and individuals. We could not operate without the help of the hundreds of volunteers who give their time to our mission. We welcome volunteering from community groups who want to focus on special projects. If a group has a particular expertise, we pair them with an appropriate project. Some of the large projects that we have undertaken include: planting an apple orchard, building sheds, and installing green houses.
Monetary support is crucial to run The Good Samaritan Inn. We do obtain some of our food supplies from the Central Illinois Food Bank and the Midwest Food Bank. Individual and group donations as well as corporate grants fund our noon meal program and our Mercy Program Job Training. Additionally, we are beneficiaries of the United Way and the yearly WSOY Food Drive.
